The Milan research unit focuses on how late antique commentators view the work of the poets, investigating the words they use in order to describe their actions, namely, not only the poet’s writing a text, but also his speaking to a community of citizens, his guiding, directing, and supporting them. In order to have a better understanding of the topic, two main research paths will be followed: 1) how Virgil is viewed both when commented upon in full (such as by Tiberius Claudius Donatus) and when occasionally quoted (e.g., by the Fathers); 2) how David/the poet of the Psalms is viewed when Psalms are commented upon.
